Reader's question:
The bidding was:
South | West | North | East |
---|---|---|---|
1NT | 2![]() | Pass | Pass |
Pass |
My partner and I play Evil defence over 1NT. My partner overcalled 2H to show both majors. Was it a right call? Would 'Double' after 1NT be better to show her 17 hcp?
It’s always good to have options available. East can either double or make a bid that shows both majors. How inconvenient for West unless EW are playing Landy and East bids 2C which West can pass. Even after double, the final contract would be 2H because West will retreat to 2C and East will bid 2H.
Personally, I am bloodthirsty and would double 1NT every time with a hand like East’s, even though the danger of missing a major suit fit is a real one.
