1/1 Chapter 8

This is the final deal I want to review from the session on Friday 17/04/26 where, once more, the game
force 1NT was very effective and the result could have been great but only if you were Deep Finesse

  • North opens 1S
  • South 1NT, game force
  • North 2C
  • South 2H: “do you have heart support? If so tell me about your key cards”
  • North bids 2NT, no heart support
  • South keeps trying, with 3D
  • Once more North denies having three card support by calling 3NT

Now South should give up and play in 3NT. If South is still keen, however, they can bid 4NT which should
be ‘quantitative’ but realistically we should have stopped it 3NT

Interestingly, Deep Finesse cannot make 6NT with the South hand but can if it is played by North.
Looking at all the hands I would have thought South would have a better chance, but it all depends on
the opening lead. It looks like a spade will scupper 6NT by South, but even the lead of a diamond from
East won’t beat 6NT. A great ‘double dummy’ problem for the reader

In Chapter 9 we’ll look at one level openings and suit responses, from another session at X-Clubs
