This deal comes from Tuesday 25/11/25 at X-Clubs and presents us with a number of questions as well as a double dummy answer that I expect none of us would find at the table

Q.1: If playing a weak NT should East open 1D or 1NT?
A.1: It’s over to whoever East is. 1D is safe and conservative, 1NT can be fraught with danger.

Q.2: If East opens 1D should West bid 2D or pass?
A.2:Most of us would raise to 2D but passing has merit. It will ensure that partner does not get any ideas about competing or sacrificing. Surprisingly, a raise to 2D might spring NS into action and result in a game they would normally not bid

Q3: If West passes 1D, North will double. What should South bid?
A3: A quiet 1S is reasonable

Q4: What should North now do?
A4: A raise to 2S is about right

Q5: What next?
A5: Both of the NS partnership can now re-evaluate their respective hands, South now raising the ante to 3S. I believe at match points North should pass but many will disagree and go to game

Q6. How does Deep Finesse get 4S by South one down?
A6. West leads a club to East’s A and Q before East returns a LOW diamond to West, who now gives East a club ruff!

Q7: Is this a reasonable defence?
A7: It might be at TEAMS, especially if West has supported diamonds. But at match points, I don’t think anyone will find it
