Thursday Tips 04

Continuing with the theme “It’s better to underbid and overplay than to overbid and overplay”. This time it’s an easy to bid part score where many pairs were unable to stop where their cards told them they should. This deal comes from X-Clubs on Thursday 17/7/25

After a pass from dealer, North opens 1H and East passes. South has a perfectly good raise to 2H and North should have no reason to bid any more. But, surprisingly, many pairs must have seen more in their cards than I can, with quite a few overboard in 4H. But, needless to say, some even made, thanks
to what must have been somewhat inept defence.

But the thing is, those who risked life and limb and bid to 4H and made 4H scored about 85% on the board, whereas those who stayed in 2H and made what is the ‘par’ result of nine tricks, scored 80%. The 85% required poor defence and used up a lot of nervous energy, whereas the 80% was assured with a bit of careful play. Which would YOU rather be, and underbidder and overplayer or an overbidder who needs inept opponents?
