NZ-Wide Pairs a Valuable Yardstick for X-Clubs

This year X-Clubs counts itself fortunate to have received data files covering the results of over 300 pairs from 18 clubs. This is over three times as many as came in last year. The value of this in establishing the validity of X-Clubs scores is huge. It comes but once a year, this golden opportunity to compare X-Clubs results for 300 pairs to the national results of over three times as many players when they appear a week later.

In no particular order we would like to thank the: Hastings, Papatoetoe, Hutt, Hamilton, Taupo, Masterton, Rotorua, Waikanae, Gisborne, Cambridge, Kaitaia, Dargaville, Marlborough, Paraparaumu, Golden Bay, New Plymouth, Tauranga and Invercargill clubs for their contributions.

This exercise should give credibility to the seemingly enigmatic variations we often see when comparing X-Club results with club results. The theory is that the more results you have to compare, the more accurate the comparison. The results for a club session with five tables often get turned on their head when stacked up against a field of 50 tables. Here we have a result for 150 tables being stacked up against a result for, maybe, 450+ tables.

If we see that very little gets turned on its head then we can claim that our results for, say, 80 tables are as valid as they can possibly be. In other words - X-Club results are the reality and it's actually the club results that are bizarre!
