Evil 22-05

From across the world, a reader sent me this deal from a teams contest in Ireland. Neither side distinguished themselves on the deal, my correspondent ending up in the ungainly contract of 2H in the South seat. Their team mates, in the EW seats, were in 4S. Both contracts failed. Let’s take a look at the full deal:

The NS hands are perfect for an “Evil” 4C opening bid! Let me describe the 4 level bids as we play them, for the benefit of those who either have not read the relevant chapters of “Evil Acol” or those who might consider using the idea: extremely shaped two suiters are opened EITHER 2NT or at the 4 level in a suit. The 2NT openers are stronger and game force, the 4 level openers weaker, about five losers rather than two or three.

The 4 level openers are the same configuration as the “Evil Twos”: 4C is clubs and hearts, 4D diamonds and hearts, 4H hearts and spades, and 4S spades an a minor. Four or five losers. The 2NT opening bid shows the same shapes by rebids over the relay of 3C, from 4C to 4S. We have actually added very strong 4441 hands to this as well, with rebids at the 3 level after the 3C relay, but let’s forget about them for now.

So, with this South hand, South has a perfect 4C opening bid. West will probably see sense and pass, and North, being able to cover at least three losers because of the huge club support and spade ace, bids 5C. OK, we have missed the cold slam as the cards lie, but at least we have bid to a very sound game.
