The bidding was:

Reader’s question:
Q1 I don’t understand why North opened 1NT, his partner bid 2D (transfer to H). Considering my partner's PASS, I thought it would be a NS contract, therefore bid 3C (lead directive). Should I have bid 3C?

Q2 After North bid 3H, my partner had three Clubs support (I found this out after laying her cards on the table), but chose to bid 3S. It confused me. If she had six Spades, she would bid at the first round. I worked it out she had maximum 5 spades. Should my partner PASS? Or, she could bid 3S? I looked at my singleton spade, our opponents had more spades than us. I therefore decided to bid 4C, hoping it should go down less than spades.

Please comment on our bidding, and advise what the proper bidding should be.

North’s opening bid of 1NT is certainly odd, I could understand it if he had five small spades and a balanced hand but with those spades and those clubs for sure it's not a hand he would want to play in No Trumps. Bidding 3C that early is asking for trouble and East can be forgiven for thinking that you had a GOOD hand, hence East’s bidding, probably expecting that 3NT might be possible your way. Don’t forget that bidding like 1NT transfer to 2H could be done on a combined 12 count in the NS hands! Replay this board by clicking here.
