North has an opening bid of 1D, not 1NT, which is what all Norths appear to have known. Should East overcall with 1H? You may have been taught that an overcall should be made only with a GOOD five card or longer suit. That would cut a 1H overcall out. If East passes, should South respond? Of course, even though the learner may have been taught that to respond you must have at least SIX points.

If South does respond with 1S, what does North bid next? This is where the new player really MUST learn and understand what a REVERSE is. A bid of 2H to show the second suit in this instance is out of the question. Why? Because South has bypassed hearts and is not going to have more than three unless South has 5+ spades and 4 hearts. A bid of 2H therefore carries the partnership past a playable level IF South has a normal minimum response. Therefore, to bid 2H North should have a minimum of 17 HCP, and with this hand should rebid 2D. That should be the final contract IF a) East has not overcalled with 1H and b) South does not now bid 2S, which is to play and NOT showing any more than minimum values.

There is much more to this deal to come. That will be covered in a further article in a new format. Find out what contracts are possible and how to play them by clicking here.
