Some basic bidding lessons were clearly ignored when this board came up.

Bidding lesson 1. When East opens 1S, West’s correct response is 1NT. West has enough points to respond but not at the two level and 1NT is the best West can do. West should hope to be able to bid the heart suit later.

Lesson 2. North might not like sitting under East’s 1S opening bid but does have enough to bid 2D.

Lesson 3. East should PASS if North bids 2D. Double would NOT be for penalties.

Lesson 4. If North PASSES, East should rebid 2D and NOT 2S. 2D shows the same thing, 5 spades, but also 4 or 5 diamonds.

Lesson 5. West wants to play this one in HEARTS, so when either North bids 2D or East rebids 2D, West should bid 2H and East should know to pass.

There are also declarer play lessons here, because those Wests who did play in the correct contract of 2H or 3H failed to make the best of this hand. I will not be giving any lessons on declarer play in this week’s review, but would welcome some ideas from readers, as an exercise, as to how West should play a contract of 3H, and WHY. I will review this deal from a declarer perspective in a few weeks time perhaps, so you will have plenty of time to give me YOUR ideas on the declarer play.
