Vil Moves on to Thursdays

Hello dear readers and a very Happy New Year.
First, the bad news: this is my final Wednesday column. But now: better news for those of you who want to keep reading and improving. I am moving on to the next stage, “THURSDAY REVIEW” which will be a small step up from the Wednesday Reviews. A small step for most, but it could be a giant step for some, to borrow a phrase from the man on the moon. Thursday Reviews will follow the play of some of our recent Wednesday players who have taken the step up to Thursday nights at our local Hutt club. I have no idea at what level other clubs play on Thursdays but hopefully not all that different to our Thursday nights.

Thursday Reviews will be posted here on the Compassmate web site, no doubt suitably edited (for political correctness) by my good friend, X-Clubs administrator Mike Neels. If you would like to receive the originals as they are sent to Mike, please let me know and I will put you on the “Thursday” mailing list.

In the meantime, before play starts in the new year, let me tell you about my next book, which will be available ONLY via email, at least for the time being. "Thirteen Tricks” is aimed at PARTNERSHIPS who want to improve their bridge play. It is going to be a great help to any partnership that wants to (and is capable), achieve the level of play that will leave others wondering how it can be done. There are tricks that will show the reader how to think outside the square and sometimes see through the cards (without peeking!). Many of those tricks will be mentioned in the coming Thursday reviews, which will continue to be posted on the current web site. But not every trick in my book: those will be confined to the book itself.

As an illustration of what “Thirteen Tricks” will be about, let me give you a lead problem:
You are SOUTH and this has been the bidding:
Dealer W NS VUL

SouthWestNorthEast
-1-1
-1-21
-3-3NT

  1. 4th suit forcing

You hold the following hand as South: what will YOU lead?

KJ3
KT54
QJT2
A5

If you would like to receive the “Thursday Reviews” direct from me when they are written, then please let me know by email, to villyn@xtra.co.nz

And if you would like to know about “Thirteeen Tricks” send me an email indicating your interest and I will send you more information about it.

With many best wishes for better bridge and better results in 2018.
